Title: SMS BASED HOME AUTOMATION SYSTEM

Technological developments tend to consider people and make life easier for people. Yet as it is experienced every day, again and again made life more complicated and stole time which cannot be turned back. Thus, saving time while improving solutions or (at least) combining and administrating technological products is the key area these days. Against modern life’s challenges automation offers an easy to use mechanism to monitor and administer all electronic and basic control devices around home/factory. This system should reduce the relevant human factor in such a service sector and increase the productivity not just by spearing more resources for the production but also decreasing the defections that may be originated by human factor. The system should be also be designed to cover a large spectrum where automation is needed.

The current project will be aimed at using the mobile hand set as a long distance communication device. Short Message Service (SMS) can be sending to any mobile user of any service provider with no charge or a minimum charge. This system is designed using a Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) modem. The GSM modem is configured as a receiver which sends the SMS to a computer after receiving it completely. The SMS sent by the user is written in a particular format. The computer receives the message and decodes it and identifies the task to be done. Accordingly the computer sends one code to the microcontroller and the controller performs the task. In this way the devices connected to the controller is operated through an SMS.

1. INTRODUCTON

The new age of technology has redefined communication. Most people nowadays have access to mobile phones and thus the world indeed has become a global village. At any given moment, any particular individual can be contacted with the mobile phone. But the application of mobile phone cannot just be restricted to sending SMS or starting conversations. New innovations and ideas can be generated from it that can further enhance its capabilities. Technologies such as Infra-red, Bluetooth, etc which has developed in recent years goes to show the very fact that improvements are in fact possible and these improvements have eased our life and the way they live.

Remote management of several home and office appliances is a subject of growing interest and in recent years we have seen many systems providing such controls. These days, apart from supporting voice calls a mobile phone can be used to send text messages as well as multimedia messages (that may contain pictures, graphics, animations, etc). Sending written text messages is very popular among mobile phone users. Instant messaging, as it is also known, allows quick transmission of short messages that allow an individual to share ideas, opinions and other relevant information.

A control system which is based on the GSM technology that effectively allows to control from a remote area to the desired location. The application of suggested system is immense in the ever changing technological world. It allows a greater degree of freedom to an individual whether it is controlling the household appliances equipments. The need to be physically present in order to control appliances of a certain location is eliminated with the use of the system.

1.1. AUTOMATION:-

• The act of implementing the control of equipment with advanced technology; usually involving electronic hardware; "automation replaces human workers by machines”. Against modern life’s challenges automation offers an easy to use mechanism to monitor and administer all electronic and basic control devices around home/factory.

• This system should reduce the relevant human factor in such a service sector and increase the productivity not just by spearing more resources for the production but also decreasing the defections that may be originated by human factor. • A self-driven computing of chance from which human initiative has been excluded, and an interruption of this process in informative situations intended by humans.

• The process of writing a set of instructions that are designed, scripted, tested, and checked in by a person, then executed by a machine, to produce results that can be analyzed.

Example of automation:

One example of a closed-loop operation is the machine used in the manufacture of paper. Paper is formed when a suspension of pulpy fibers in water is emptied onto a conveyer belt whose surface is a sieve. Water drains out of the suspension, leaving the pulp on the belt. As the pulp dries, paper is formed. The rate at which the pulpy suspension is added to the conveyer belt can be automatically controlled by a machine. A sensing device at the end of the conveyor belt is capable of measuring the thickness of the paper and reporting back to the pouring machine on the condition of the product. If the paper becomes too thick, the sensor can tell the pouring machine to slow the rate at which pulpy suspension is added to the belt. If the paper becomes too thin, the sensor can tell the machine to increase the rate at which the raw material is added to the conveyor belt.

1.2. TYPES OF AUTOMATION:-

• Although automation can play a major role in increasing productivity and reducing costs in service industries—as in the example of a retail store that installs bar code scanners in its checkout lanes—automation is most prevalent in manufacturing industries. In recent years, the manufacturing field has witnessed the development of major automation alternatives. Some of these types of automation include:

• Information technology (IT)

• Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM)

• Numerically controlled (NC) equipment

• Robots

• Flexible manufacturing systems (FMS)

• Computer integrated manufacturing (CIM)

• Information technology (IT) encompasses a broad spectrum of computer technologies used to create, store, retrieve, and disseminate information.

• Numerically controlled (NC) machines are programmed versions of machine tools that execute operations in sequence on parts or products.

• Robots are a type of automated equipment that may execute different tasks that are normally handled by a human operator • By seeing these examples to notice that automation which is useful in every field.

• Particularly in homes, for controlling of Tele Visions Remote control is used, which is one of the example for automation system but it is limited to particular point.

• But in this project the automation system is distance independent but depends on mobile devise and automation is through SMS.

1.3. GSM TECHNOLOGY:-

An open, digital cellular technology used for transmitting mobile voice and data services. GSM is fast becoming the most popular way to deliver information, communication and entertainment services to people worldwide. The ability for a customer to make and receive calls, sends and receives data, or accesses other services when travelling outside the coverage area of their home network.

The GSM family of technologies has provided the world with mobile communications since 1991. In over twenty years of development, GSM has been continually enhanced to provide platforms that deliver an increasingly broad range of mobile services as demand grows.

The GSM family of technologies has provided the world with mobile communications since 1991. In over twenty years of development, GSM has been continually enhanced to provide platforms that deliver an increasingly broad range of mobile services as demand grows. Where the industry started with plain voice calls, it now has a powerful platform capable of supporting mobile broadband and multimedia services. GSM is now used in 219 countries and territories serving more than three billion people and providing travelers with access to mobile services wherever they go.

A GSM modem is a wireless modem that works with a GSM wireless network. A wireless modem behaves like a dial-up modem. The main difference between them is that a dial-up modem sends and receives data through a fixed telephone line while a wireless modem sends and receives data through radio waves.

A GSM modem can be an external device or a PC Card / PCMCIA Card. Typically, an external GSM modem is connected to a computer through a serial cable or a USB cable. A GSM modem in the form of a PC Card / PCMCIA Card is designed for use with a laptop computer. It should be inserted into one of the PC Card / PCMCIA Card slots of a laptop computer. Like a GSM mobile phone, a GSM modem requires a SIM card from a wireless carrier in order to operate.

As mentioned in earlier sections of this SMS tutorial, computers use AT commands to control modems. Both GSM modems and dial-up modems support a common set of standard AT commands. GSM modem is just like a dial-up modem.

In addition to the standard AT commands, GSM modems support an extended set of AT commands. These extended AT commands are defined in the GSM standards. With the extended AT commands, the following operations can be performed.

• Reading, writing and deleting SMS messages.

• Sending SMS messages.

• Monitoring the signal strength.

• Monitoring the charging status and charge level of the battery.

• Reading, writing and searching phone book entries.

The number of SMS messages that can be processed by a GSM modem per minute is very low -- only about six to ten SMS messages per minute.

GSM / GPRS Modem:-

In general, a GSM/GPRS modem is recommended for use with a computer to send and receive messages. This is because some mobile phones have certain limitations comparing to GSM/GPRS modems. Some of the limitations are described below:

• Some mobile phone models (example: Ericsson R380) cannot be used with a computer to receive concatenated SMS messages.

• A concatenated SMS message is a message that contains more than 140 bytes. (A normal SMS message can only contain at most 140 bytes.) Concatenated SMS works like this the sender's mobile device breaks a message longer than 140 bytes into smaller parts. Each of these parts are then fitted in a single SMS message and sent to the recipient. When these SMS messages reach the destination, the recipient's mobile device will combine them back to one message. When the mobile phone receives the SMS messages that are parts of a concatenated SMS message, it combines them to one message automatically. The correct behavior should be: when the mobile phone receives the SMS messages that are parts of a concatenated SMS message, it forwards them to the computer without combining them.

• Many mobile phone models cannot be used with a computer to receive MMS messages. Because when they receive a MMS notification, they handle it automatically instead of forwarding it to the computer.

• A mobile phone may not support some AT commands, command parameters and parameter values. For example, some mobile phones do not support the sending and receiving of SMS messages in text mode. So, the AT command "AT+CMGF=1" (it instructs the mobile phone to use text mode) will cause an error message to be returned. Usually GSM/GPRS modems support a more complete set of AT commands than mobile phones.

• Most SMS messaging applications have to be available 24 hours a day. (For example, an SMS messaging application that provides ringtone downloading service should be running all the time so that a user can download ringtones any time he/she wants.) If such SMS messaging applications use mobile phones to send and receive SMS messages, the mobile phones have to be switched on all the time. However, some mobile phone models cannot operate with the battery removed even when an AC adaptor is connected, which means the battery will be charged 24 hours a day.

Chapter1 gives the information about introduction part of the Project and Chapter2 tells the information about basic block diagram description. Chapter 3 gives the information about AT commands of GSMmodem&RS232 serial communication. Chapter 4 will give the information about MAX232&AT89C52 microcontroller.chapter5 will give the information about relay working and power supply unit.
